The Hell Gate Healing Project

The Hell Gate Healing Project is a writing workshop that explores how telling stories helps us survive. The project is dedicated to helping everyday people write about difficult experiences.

We ask what is healing? We examine the patient and caregiver’s perspectives, the isolation of illness, the ethics of today’s medicine, the struggles caregivers face, and the vulnerability patients often feel. We want to be reminded that behind every illness is a living breathing person; we want to humanize healthcare.

We examine loss, physical and emotional…the loss of home and country…the loss of culture and identity through immigration or war…the loss of family members through death, divorce, and abandonment. We explore how loss redefines us.

Most of all we want to give people a chance to change their histories, to ask the unasked, to say the unsaid, to see the unseen, and to be changed wholly by the experience.
